Home > Can photography be a career?
(0)

Ah yes, that age-old question. The quick and easy answer is “YES” but like most professions nowadays, it requires continuous development and updating to stay relevant and to be able to compete with technological developments.  The good news is that photography is not on the list of top 9 professions that will be taken over by robots in the next 10 years.

Before technology took over our day to day existence, the path into photography relied on you finding a professional photographer in search of an assistant. You would spend years carrying bags around and setting lights for shots before you got the chance to be behind the lens. This path gave you the opportunity to learn indirectly from a professional by performing the role of assistant.  After a  few years, you would be in a position to start finding your own clients and become a professional photographer. Unfortunately today, we don’t have the time and money to spend years making tea for clients and run around finding the right location.  While technology can increase the competition in photography, it can also help you develop your skills at a faster rate.  A professional photographer does not need to spend years learning technical details that will not be relevant when you are behind the lens ready to take the perfect image. A short course and the right kit can set you up for a prosperous career in photography if you are willing to put in the hard work.

You can be self-employed and run your own studio or work from home. You could also start as an assistant with professional photographers and work your way up or you can do a course like our Professional Photography Course.  The mentoring sessions are really special for you to learn your style, plus you walk away with a made website and portfolio and a community.
To become a photographer you’ll need determination, the motivation to network and a substantial portfolio that showcases your talent. The money and clients are there, it is all about you.
