Home > The best cameras for Black and White Photography
(0)

We probably know that we can change our digital camera mode to monochrome or shoot in raw and convert in post-production but did you know that there are digital cameras that only shoot in Black and white?
These are the best for the job as they do not collect any colour information at all on the sensor. Coloured filters are laid normally over the sensor stopping the full spectrum of available light so even if you do choose to put the dial to monochrome on a normal camera it won’t achieve the same monochromatic effect as a specific monochromatic camera (but bonus is if you shoot in raw you will have the choice of colour and black and white).

These cameras do not come cheap and we are recommending four here:

  1. Fujifilm X-Pro1-M
  2. Leica M Monochrom
  3. Phase One IQ3 100MP Achromatic

FujiFilm is way the cheapest and also beautiful design plus a really great sensor. You will achieve great results with this.
The sensor only records luminance. Leica, it is all in the name, slick design, and great sharpness and results. but a heavy price tag of over £6,000. Phase one is a medium format camera and with a £50,000 price tag you would want to be pretty committed but that being said it can capture more than what the naked eye can see, as it is designed to capture a broader spectrum of light.

4. A fun cheaper option is Ilford Black and white disposable film and bring the film to a Master processor and printer like Adrian Ensor . You can also check out Adrian’s Talk with LIoP earlier this year here.
